Blessed John Henry Cardinal NewmanAll Newman Centers originated from Oxford University’s Newman Society (est. 1878). The Society was named as a tribute to Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, who advanced the cause of Catholicism at Oxford both as an Anglican striving to recover Anglicanism’s Catholic roots and subsequently as a convert to Catholicism. The Newman Society at Oxford exists to promote the Catholic Faith and culture within the University, and has served as the model for Catholic student societies throughout the English-speaking world, including the Catholic Newman Center at Missouri Western State university.
